Another from the archives, it's a poignant exploration of the complexities and struggles within relationships, or in this matter, situationships. They can be a real emotional rollercoaster, where we experience moments of hope, but also have to face the harsh reality we often refuse to see. If you’ve experienced one (or are currently in one), I hope you find solace in this poem.
Can you just pretend?
Pretend you love me?
Every flaw you point out
Every time you exploit my shortcomings
Can you just pretend
They don’t exist?
Every time I joke, you laugh
Then say it wasn’t that funny
Can you just pretend
I brighten your days?
Every interest shared, you poke holes in
Saying it’s not the same
Can you just pretend
I’m perfect for you?
Every time I talk to you
I find another reason to fall harder despite it all
Can I just pretend
I don’t love you?
