Wrote this coming back from Shoshone after observing birds in the vast open sky versus those in the city. I always feel bad for the pigeons, sparrows, starlings, and other winged creatures; I like to think we’re in their territory, and they’re just trying to survive in a world where construction constantly threatens theirs. Anyway, please enjoy, and consider setting up a bird feeder if you’re in a suitable place to do so (also, if you own pets that shed a lot, brush them or bring their clumps of fur outside so the birds can use them for nests!).
I wish I could tell the birds
There’s life beyond this concrete bowl
Where you’ll be welcomed
And can feast
In frequency and abundance
Where your world doesn’t end
Under a tire
Sacrificed for nothing
